Smith Thomas & Smith

In 1960, George Lee (Buck) Smith, his brother Ernest (JR) Smith, and Raymond (Buck) Thomas left W.C. & A.N. Miller Construction Company to form Smith, Thomas & Smith, Inc., General Contractors (STS), specializing in residential remodeling in the Bethesda, Chevy Chase and Northwest DC neighborhoods. From its inception, STS has performed various small remodeling projects and repairs (today called “Handyman” services), and small, medium and large projects and additions, utilizing an in-house designer (today called “Design Build”).

In 1987, three employees of STS, Tom Brown, superintendent, John Gubisch, designer-draftsman-estimator and Michael Smith (son and nephew of JR and Buck), paint estimator, were offered and bought STS. The three previous owners (by then Buck Smith, JR Smith and Jack Raff) remained with the company to ensure a seamless change of ownership.

STS continues today as one of the premier General Contracting companies in the Washington, DC metro area, providing all types of residential remodeling services, from repairs and subcontracting work, Handyman services, Kitchen and Bath remodeling and renovation, painting, and all sizes of Additions. Their decades-long relationships with their suppliers and subcontractors insure timely estimating, informed scheduling and competitive pricing.

In addition to its in-house design staff, STS also bids many Architect-designed projects for construction. Their in-house superintendent, carpenters, general laborers and paint crews provide projects with a focus on close supervision, high quality craftsmanship and timely completion. Their relationship with local and out-of town Architects, Decorators and Designers has provided many special, client-directed results.

STS is consistently ranked in the Top 500 remodeling contractors in the country as ranked by Remodeling Magazine, and is well positioned to compete in the Washington, DC metropolitan area residential remodeling.

He attended the University of Maryland for four years studying various engineering curricula while awaiting the opening of the School of Architecture. He accepted the position of Designer/Draftsman, passed the General contractor Licensing Exam, and began designing and drafting the in-house, Company projects along with performing estimating, contracting, and billing.
